Youth will be Youth - People are people…
No matter how you slice it, wherever you go, people will always still be people. And youth will always be youth. Understanding this is a great challenge in youth ministry.
I can remember back 12 years ago as a young and ambitious 19 year old youth worker; My first assignment: create and facilitate a youth drama team. I called it “The Show” and later the name was changed to just “echo”. Echo became more than just a drama team but a once a month “youth explosion” night.
Thinking back about my effort to build the drama team I can recall some of the many frustrations in dealing with teens. I remember thinking to myself that at some point everything would change. Like the really hyper active kid that is always breaking some thing might actually calm down and contribute to the group. Or the girl who’s neurotic and psychotic and always seems to stress out over weird details might actually enjoy herself for once.
The truth is: teens are awkward and weird at times
Now, after having pastored hundreds of youth and traveled cross country observing other youth ministries, I realize that some things will never change. Youth will always be youth… And I’m okay with that.
Hang in there – even when at times it feels like your riding a bull in a rodeo. I recently received an amazing 5 page email from one of my former students who is now a young adult. This 20-something reminded me of all the reasons I’ve stayed in youth ministry over the years.
You see, being a youth pastor isn’t a stepping stone on your way to becoming a “Real Pastor”; but it is the opportunity to mold the next generation of believers of Christ. Youth are flexible, bendable and pliable. Not stuck in their ways created by years and years of habits. They’re beautiful, amazing, and creative. All they need, is you to unlock their potential. To believe in them.
So go ahead and plant a seed today. You may not see the fruit for many years to come…but stay focused, committed and on the path.
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9 ESV
